10 Common Issues that Create Productivity Drag in a Company

I had a coaching call with a super smart business owner, but like all business owners, he had blind spots. One of his blind spots was processes and procedures. He is self-described ADHD, which causes him to get bored and bounce around.

As we dug into his processes, we began to see how much productivity drag was occurring. We created a process map that highlighted all the areas for improvement. We didn’t tackle all of them. We had a brainstorming session with a ton of ideas, and then we plotted them on an “Impact and Feasibility” chart.

We knew where we needed to start. We began with improving the communication system that had been developed over the past 12 years.

Before you begin to map out your processes and see where you can improve productivity drag, you need to know the common issues that many companies face when trying to become more efficient.

1. Poor Communication

This is often at the root of many problems within organizations. Ineffective communication can lead to misunderstandings, missed deadlines, and conflict among team members. 2. Lack of Clear Direction or Goals 

Without a clear strategy or objectives, employees can become disengaged and lack motivation. This can result in reduced productivity and a lack of focus on the organization’s priorities.

3. Resistance to Change

Organizations often face challenges when implementing new systems, processes, or strategies. Employees might resist change due to uncertainty, fear of the unknown, or discomfort with new ways of working.

4. Inadequate Leadership

Leadership issues such as lack of direction, poor decision-making, or failure to inspire and motivate employees can significantly impact organizational effectiveness.

5. Poor Organizational Culture: 

A toxic or negative workplace culture can lead to high employee turnover, low morale, and reduced productivity. Cultural issues might include a lack of trust, office politics, or a failure to value and recognize contributions.

This includes poor hiring practices, inadequate training and development opportunities, and ineffective performance management. Talent management issues can lead to a workforce that is ill-equipped to meet organizational needs.

When different parts of an organization are not aligned in their goals or strategies, it can lead to inefficiencies, duplication of efforts, and conflicting priorities.

9. Inadequate Adaptability to Market Changes

Companies that fail to adapt to changes in the market, including technological advancements and shifts in consumer preferences, risk falling behind their competitors.

10. Inefficient Processes and Procedures

Outdated or convoluted processes can lead to inefficiencies, errors, and frustration among employees, impacting the overall productivity of the organization.

Addressing these common organizational issues often requires a multifaceted approach, including effective communication, strong leadership, a positive culture, and a willingness to adapt and change as necessary.

We can’t work on all ten issues at once. That would be overwhelming. We need to have a clear vision of what we want, why we want it, and how every project aligns to reaching our goals.
